Naima, known as Nina within her classes, will be competing at 5 AM EST on Saturday, August 3 in the Women’s 50m Freestyle swimming event as part of heat one with hopes of moving onto the semi-finals. She will be representing her home country of Djibouti during her competition. She also represents the over 30% of international student population at American National University, attending her classes while in different time zones than her fellow classmates and professors. Her online education at ANU allows her to participate in swim competitions across the globe without pausing her education.

This is a milestone for Nina to acknowledge her hard work, devotion, and perseverance that has led her to this world stage. She has competed internationally for three years to lead her to the 2024 Olympics with the Djiboutian national team. Some of her accolades include placing third in the 2023 8th Africa Aquatics Zone 3 in the 50S Freestyle and 50S Breaststroke. She is ranked 1st in the Djiboutian national team. She’s competed in countries across the globe, like Japan, Angola, the United Arab Emirates, and more.

“When I had Naima in BUS117, she attended our lectures from across the globe, often setting her alarm to wake up in the middle of the night to be present. This dedication should come as no surprise, given the extraordinary grit, determination, and commitment required to be an Olympic athlete,” says Dr. Lyndsey Obringer, dean of business programs at ANU. “We are thrilled to have one of our own competing in the 2024 Olympics, and I will be cheering her on this Saturday!”

For most, the streaming platform Peacock will be covering the events of the Olympics.

“I am immensely proud of Naima for her dedication to her sport. With ANU’s global educational outreach, we have been able to meet students like Naima that represent the passion our students have to bettering themselves and their futures,” explains ANU president, Frank Longaker. “Her achievements both in and out of the classroom are a testament to her hard work and determination. We stand behind her with unwavering support and wish her the best of luck in the women’s 50-meter freestyle event. Go Naima!”

UPDATE – Naima placed third in heat 1, ranked 75 overall!

American National University is proud to announce the new nursing software through UbiSim Virtual Reality. Those students looking to become a nurse can now do so with enhanced skills training and practice that will broaden their understanding across multiple hospital scenarios. Previously, nursing students attending ANU had to attend clinical training through partners of ANU, with the use of UbiSim we can now exceed standard hours of clinical training to further enhance skill development.

The UbiSim Virtual Reality experience will only boost American National University’s High Tech, High Touch™ initiative to provide students with an all-inclusive education. Students will receive lab equipment and an Oculus Quest 2 All-in-One VR Headset that they can utilize at the Pikeville campus. The virtual reality goggles with provide students with an immersive experience where they can develop clinical reasoning, decision making, and communication skills. Along with this, there are no hidden fees with ANU—at $310 per credit hour with all equipment and textbooks needed within that price, and this includes bootcamped training for the NCLEXRN.

“At American National University, virtual reality simulation is incorporated into the nursing curriculum,” says Dean of Nursing, Dr. Marie-Bernard Lazare. “Using the Oculus VR system along with an innovative virtual simulation platform, the students are immersed in a variety of clinical scenarios that take place in a less intimidating environment, which is more conducive to learning. The faculty and students are excited about using VR and look forward to what comes next.”

The UbiSim VR implementation to ANU’s nursing curriculum revolutionizes the way students can learn. The technology allows faculty to customize scenarios in hospital settings so that students learn as they would in actual clinical setting, and gain a much deeper understanding than what a textbook could provide. Students will learn everything they would need—such as interacting with patients and their families, taking vitals, and administering medicine, among many other experiences. The program also does not operate on point-and-click mechanisms, but real-life hand gestures to provide active learning. Every interaction that students perform in these VR scenarios provides them with the experience they need to make their nursing career a reality.

The future of nursing education is here, and American National University is proud to offer students the opportunity to learn in this high-tech platform. ANU does online differently. Students receive live face-to-face instruction from anywhere they can access the internet and in-person instruction in Pikeville for skills training. To learn more about ANU’s over 136-year history of educating men and women and implementing this history in our innovative eUniversity, go to an.edu/elearning.

The Leadership Class, who are set to graduate this term, hosted this fun fair as their Community Project. The students included Matthew Hamilton, Samantha Justice, Brandy Scott, and Sarah Shepherd. The event reached over 150 residents of the Pikeville area, where families could receive free physicals, food, and giveaways. Matthew Hamilton and Sarah Shepherd also gave free back-to-school haircuts to the boys and girls who attended with their families.

Along with those activities, families had many free events to participate in. The Healthy Fun Fair included polygraph testing and fingerprinting for children and PAD screenings. They could also get free glucose readings and become educated on the harms of smoking. Thanks to the Pikeville Fire Department, families could also learn the ins and outs of a firetruck, and thanks to Kentucky State Police, they could also learn the same about police cruisers. Air-Evac Life Team also provided education on helicopter rescue landings. With all the education that families received that day, they also got to let loose with some cornhole games and inflatables.

“The event was a great success because we were able to provide some care for an underserved area in eastern Kentucky! We hope that it continues and continues to grow,” says student, Matthew Hamilton. “Hopefully the community and children were able to see that people care for them and are willing to help.”

There are also special thanks to those entities that helped make the fair happen. Those thanks go to: Pike County Health Department, Kentucky State Police, Pikeville Fire Department, Broad Bottom Grooming, Goodfella’s Barbershop, Hurley’s Inflatables, Rudd Equipment, Air-Evac Life Team, and Walmart.

“The community has been buzzing before, during and after the event,” says paramedic program director, James Hess. “The community leaders that [were] present commented on how much they appreciated being invited. Hopefully, moving forward we can continue to host the Healthy Fun Fair. The Nursing Graduates did an outstanding job organizing [it].”

American National University Responds to Department of Education Settlement

SALEM, VA – A sweeping settlement made by the U. S. Department of Education in the class action lawsuit, Sweet v. Cardona, includes many highly questionable claims that unlikely warrant loan forgiveness under applicable federal policy. While not taking a position on the overall decision, American National University is concerned about the precedent set given the highly dubious nature of many of the claims lodged against the institution, and forcefully rejects the department’s implication that there is evidence of misconduct on the part of the university.
American National University has thoroughly investigated the claims made against the institution. We found no evidence to substantiate any misrepresentation of any kind. Many claims simply did not state a claim eligible for relief under the statute. The majority of claims failed to provide any documentation of alleged misconduct as required by Department of Education regulations, while ANU was able to provide documentation to the Department refuting the vast majority of stated claims.

The Department appears to have taken the position that simply attending an educational institution with a particular tax status constitutes the statutory requirement of a strong indication of misconduct to warrant loan forgiveness. American National University rejects any implication created by the Department’s settlement that students who attended American National University were in any way the victims of institutional misconduct.
American National University responsibly follows applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations; and beyond that adheres to an institutional philosophy that is dedicated to the best interest of the student. A sizeable proportion of our graduates – including a number of those who filed claims against the institution – return for a second or even a third degree or other credential. More than two-thirds of those who submitted claims successfully completed a degree program with ANU.

In student satisfaction surveys over the last several years, an overwhelming majority of respondents indicated that through ANU they had completed their educational goals, would recommend ANU to a friend, and were satisfied with their individual academic programs. For example, 97.5% of respondents indicated they were “very satisfied” or “satisfied” with their overall experience with ANU in the most recent survey year.

ANU has consistently tried to limit costs and indebtedness for our students. Since 2018, ANU has slashed tuition anywhere from 10% to 54%, depending on program. We have held the line on tuition increases since that time until only recently raising tuition for a handful of programs due to inflationary pressures. What’s more, since 2018 we have eliminated nearly all additional fees that institutions typically charge: no technology fees, no activity fees, no fees for books or learning materials, no graduation fees; and for undergraduate programs, no application fees.

Founded in 1886, American National University provides opportunities for individuals who are seeking to achieve their career goals by offering credential and degree programs through distance education and blended learning. For more information, visit an.edu on the web or call 833.388.1100.

American National University is proud to have skilled educators to teach our students. As such, three of our professors, Dr. Shardul Pandya, Dr. Umesh Varma, and Dr. Azad Ali collaborated to submit two papers to the InSITE (Informing Science and Information Technology Education) 2022 conference—to be presented on July 6 and 7. Both papers focus on preparation for the doctoral dissertation. “It has been great working with my esteemed colleagues here at ANU. A team effort, lead by the inimitable Dr. Azad,” remarks Dr. Pandya.

The first paper builds upon a previous paper by Drs. Ali and Pandya in 2021 that provided the framework “for the development of a research problem statement,” as explained by Dr. Ali. It uses analytical thought processes to complete the preparation and writing of a doctoral dissertation through encouraged critical thinking and writing the research problem statement. The second paper they developed focuses on writing a literature review. This paper focuses on the lengthy, daunting process of writing such a review and how much time is wasted on unfocused and unrelated tasks. This process can be streamlined by “clarifying the prerequisites, co-requisites and the repetition and iteration process from writing the literature review,” said Dr. Ali. The paper suggests strategies to overcome the challenges that are faced in writing the literature review portion of doctoral dissertations.

“I am very happy to work with my colleagues Dr. Pandya and Dr. Varma and planning to do more collaborative research in the future,” says Dr. Ali.

Dr. Ali and Dr. Pandya are also adjunct professors at our partner institution, the University of Fairfax, and Dr. Varma serves on several dissertation committees at the school as well. Their research will help many of those students looking to earn their doctorate degree. For those ANU students looking to move onto a doctorate degree and learn more about what programs you can find at the University of Fairfax, visit ufairfax.edu.

American National University offers more than just an “online degree.” Through the Global Teach™ initiative of our High Tech, High Touch™ program delivery, we recruit distinguished faculty who are dedicated to providing an exceptional distance-based learning environment for our students.
