Academic Integrity

Academic integrity is rooted in principles of honesty, responsibility, and ethical behavior. Every member of the University community shares a responsibility to uphold these standards and to respond appropriately when violations occur. Academic dishonesty refers to any action involving the giving, taking, or use of information or materials with the intent to gain an unfair academic advantage.

Examples of academic dishonesty include, but are not limited to, plagiarism, cheating, self-plagiarism, inadequate scholarly effort, and misrepresentation of academic participation or engagement, as outlined in ANU’s Code of Academic Integrity Policy.

Preventing Plagiarism

American National University defines plagiarism as presenting another person’s words, ideas, or work as your own without proper acknowledgment of the original source, as outlined in the Code of Academic Integrity Policy. Plagiarism can take many forms and may occur whether it is intentional or unintentional.

Students found to have committed plagiarism may face disciplinary action ranging from receiving a zero on an assignment to dismissal from the University. Understanding what plagiarism is and how to properly cite sources is essential to maintaining academic integrity and avoiding these consequences.

Citation Software

You may find citation management tools helpful, particularly when working with online sources. While these tools can save time, it’s important to remember that they generate citations automatically and are not always error-free. Always review your citations carefully, as formatting or punctuation mistakes can occur. Zotero is one of several free citation management software systems, https://www.zotero.org/.

Regardless of the citation style you are using, proper citation is always required in two places: within the body of your paper or presentation at the point where the source is used, and again at the end of your work in the references list.
